Wellness begins at home
Bathrooms have evolved so much over the years, from purely functional spaces, to more organic, calming personal spaces that are all about wellbeing and restorative retreats. Wellness is still a strong theme going into 2026 and a well-designed calming spa-like bathroom not only creates a beautiful personal sanctuary but can add value to your property. To be able to make this happen, start with natural stone or stone effect tiles. Add natural wood accents to soften your bathroom and use texture on your walls and floors to add warmth and depth to the overall look. Not forgetting (if budget allows) underfloor heating for a special added comfort.
Also, if you have natural light, add lush greenery. A humidity-loving plant on your windowsill or sink helps to improve air quality and softens the look of your bathroom. Plants such as; ferns, spider plants, orchids, or a hanging trailing plant to help to save on floor space. Some plants also have the ability to absorb excess moisture from the air, reducing dampness in your bathroom.
Furnishings
Depending on space, you could consider a deep soaking freestanding bath and/or a rainfall shower to give the space a focal point and transform your bathroom with everything you need to relieve the stresses of the day. Simple glass panels for a walk-in shower or shower enclosure can help to elongate the room and reflect light around it to give the illusion of a larger bathroom. A sunken basin or countertop basin positioned on a floating shelf can also add to a spa-inspired look.
The right accessories are also vital for the overall look, as well as making the room aesthetically pleasing. They should feel warm and nice to touch, which can be achieved through careful consideration of the colour, finish and quality.
Lighting
Create the perfect ambiance through good bathroom lighting to make your space feel truly relaxing. Avoid harsh lights and if possible, have a mixture of task lighting (for applying make-up or shaving), feature lighting (to enhance a specific piece of furniture) and atmospheric lighting (to create a sense of calm. Try going with a back-lit mirror to give a subtler, softer and warmer tone of lighting creating a sense of calm in the evenings to help prepare your body for sleep. Also, think about how your lighting will be controlled (switch, sensor or even an app on your phone).
Add Detail
Bring a beautiful wooden stool into the space to put your candle, book or even your glass of wine on whilst soaking in your bathtub. Use a beautiful wooden bowl to put your natural sponges and body brushes in. Swap your bath mat for a wooden duck board. Not forgetting to add those indulgent products that can have a direct impact on our mood such as; a beautiful scented candle or diffuser to help reduce stress and boost our sense of wellbeing.
Colour Scheme
Nature is well known in helping us de-stress and a calming neutral, or nature inspired colour palette can transform your bathroom into a tranquil spa-like space. By using earthy colours such as; ochre, green, beige, chalk and soft greys, they can add warmth whilst giving an organic feel to your space. Whilst whites, beiges and light greys can help make your bathroom look bigger.
