Tile Trends

Tile trends for bathrooms are very much about personality and less about plain and ordinary.

People are getting bolder with their choices and making it ‘their’ space with less concern about longevity or resale value. Following a few years of uncertainty and unrest, people want to enjoy their bathroom and have some fun! Adding even a bold tile to a specific area of your bathroom such as your shower whilst keeping everything else neutral, will add a pop of colour and personality to your space.

Tiles can add such impact and change the total look of a room, creating depth and transforming the way a space feels. By using vivid colours, rich textures or out-of-the-box layouts they can add the ‘you’ to your bathroom. Plus, if you decide you want to update your bathroom, replacing your tiles is less expensive than re-doing your whole bathroom.

New shapes are also emerging all the time, such as hexagons and triangles as well as the revival of Art Deco design seen in the fish scale and scallop tiles.

The history of two of the most popular tile trends over the past few years

Metro tiles- dating back to the early 1900’s. The metro tile was first used in places such as hospitals and prisons due to their non-offensive design and easy to clean surface. Later used on the London Underground where they were first noticed as a design feature and then used in subway stations all around the world, which lifted them to the iconic status they enjoy today.

Metro tiles are still as popular as ever, thanks to their clean- cut geometric shape and retro aesthetic, which help them to remain very much on trend.

There are now more metro tiles on offer than ever before, giving you a much larger choice in design, finish and colour. Plus, due to the gloss finish on the tile, it will also bounce light around a room making them a perfect choice for smaller bathrooms and bathroom cloakrooms.

An alternative layout to the subway grid pattern that has been emerging as of late, is the positioning of them in a herringbone pattern to give them a more modern edge.

Terrazzo tiles- Terrazzo meaning ‘terrace or place of encounter’ originated from Italy and was the product of quarry workers using marble chips and leftovers to decorate their own home. This over time became a high-end product gracing the Italian palazzos thanks to its popularity in Venice. Originally designed as simple and affordable flooring, over time terrazzo found its way to our kitchen counters and worktops and is now a very popular tile trend. Made from chips of marble, quartz or granite, on a base of concrete or resin which is smoothed out and polished.

Its versatility as a material lends itself to any theme, or style. Plus, with so many colour schemes and patterns to choose from its easy to see why a terrazzo tile will look at home anywhere.
